Every now and then, a project comes along that pushes the envelope in all the best ways. That was exactly the case when I teamed up with Double L Interiors to photograph a bold and beautifully executed modern farmhouse interior design project in Waller, TX. This wasn’t your typical farmhouse. The house is black. The barn is black. And nearly every inch of the design is a fearless departure from what you might expect, but it works so well. Projects like this are where visual storytelling photography really shines, allowing each unique element to speak for itself while weaving together the bigger picture.
Kenedy, the talented designer behind this Double L Interiors project, shared how her client wanted something elevated. Not rough, not rustic, but a more refined take on the farmhouse aesthetic, and one that felt truly personal. The result is a modern farmhouse filled with antique accents, layered textures, and bold choices that completely reflect the client’s style. As a Houston interior photographer, this kind of shoot is what lights me up. It’s where visual storytelling photography really comes to life.
When people hear “visual storytelling photography,” they often picture styled vignettes or cozy lifestyle shots, and yes, those play a role. But for me, it goes deeper. It’s about creating images that do more than show off a room. It’s about capturing the why behind a design decision. It’s about reflecting the personality of the homeowner and the vision of the designer.
In this project, Kennedy started with a black exterior. That alone was a bold statement. But inside, she balanced that strength with warmth and softness: antique wood pieces, layered rugs, mixed metals, and thoughtful lighting. My goal with the photography was to make sure every intentional detail had a voice in the final collection of images.
I focused on highlighting the contrast: light streaming through oversized windows onto weathered wood floors, a delicate brass fixture hanging above a chunky antique table, or the way rich textures echoed throughout the home without ever feeling too busy.
This is where visual storytelling photography really shines. It helps future clients (and editors!) understand the intention behind the design. It lets them feel the space through the screen, which is exactly what your portfolio, website, and social media need to do.
Not every designer is going to go for a black house and barn, but every designer does make bold choices in their own way. Whether it’s color, layout, art, or styling, your project deserves to be photographed in a way that highlights what sets it apart.
That’s where hiring someone who specializes in interior design photography services makes all the difference.
Because I take the time to understand the design process, I’m able to plan shots that show off the thought behind each space. For this modern farmhouse project, that meant:
Each choice was intentional, on Kenedy’s part and mine. Together, we told the full story of this home. And that’s exactly what visual storytelling photography is all about.
If you’re an interior designer working hard to create out-of-the-box designs that speak to your client’s lifestyle and personality, you need images that reflect that same level of thoughtfulness. Modern farmhouse interior design is just one example of a niche style that can go so many different directions, and how you photograph it changes everything.
When potential clients land on your website or scroll your feed, they’re not just looking at furniture and finishes. They’re forming opinions. They’re deciding if your design style resonates with them. And most importantly, they’re deciding if they trust you to bring their vision to life.
That trust starts with photos that feel personal!
Designers who push creative boundaries deserve a photographer who can match that energy.
Here are a few questions to ask when hiring someone for your next project:
If the answer isn’t a resounding yes across the board, it might be time to upgrade your interior design photography services.
Photographing this project with Double L Interiors was a reminder that modern farmhouse interior design can be both rooted and refreshing. It can honor antique charm while stepping into something totally new.
And honestly? That’s exactly how I see visual storytelling photography too!
It’s not about documenting what’s in front of me. It’s about reflecting what’s behind it—the vision, the personality, and the story that brought the design to life.
If you’re designing bold, beautiful spaces that push the boundaries and reflect your client’s one-of-a-kind style, let’s work together to showcase them in the way they deserve.
